The roofing membrane is a representative of roll coatings, its basis is made of polymers.
Regardless of the type and composition, roofing membranes have the following advantages:
- long service life - with proper operation, it is 50-60 years;
- simplicity and speed of installation, since it is enough to lay only one layer of material;
- a large selection of sizes, which allows you to cover roofs of various shapes;
- resistance to sudden temperature changes;
- high elasticity indicators;
- high resistance to the negative effects of sunlight.
PVC membrane
PVC membranes are distinguished not only by their chemical composition, but also by the fact that their installation can be performed only by welding the sheets.
The main advantages of covering the roof made of polyvinyl chloride:
- high resistance to the negative effects of solar radiation;
- fire resistance;
- a large palette of colors.
When choosing the color of the roofing membrane, it should be considered that the brightness of its color will decrease over time.
Among the disadvantages, it is worth noting that PVC membranes are less resistant to the action of oils and solvents. Additionally, they contain a large percentage of volatile substances, so they evaporate over time, which negatively affects the plasticity and service life of the coating.
EPDM membrane
If PVC membranes have an elasticity of about 200%, EPDM membranes have an elasticity of 425%. High moisture impermeability and plasticity make it possible to use them in the creation of such objects as tunnels, pools, artificial reservoirs, etc.
One of the main advantages of EPDM membranes is their high environmental friendliness, as they do not emit harmful substances either during installation or during operation.
As a disadvantage of such material, its installation is carried out using a special technology using adhesive tape. But there are manufacturers that produce materials mounted by the vulcanization method, since the strength of the adhesive joint is worse than that of a welded seam.
There are also composite EPDM membranes. They have a special structure: the bottom layer is a plastic and slightly viscous mass, then a reinforced fiberglass mesh and synthetic rubber on top. This is a more expensive material, but it is ideal for a roof with a complex configuration.
TPO membrane
TPO membranes are usually reinforced with polyester fabric or mesh, but can also be produced without a reinforcing material. This is the most modern coating, and its distinguishing feature is high strength. Due to the fact that there are no volatile substances in the composition of TPO membranes, they save their plasticity much longer, therefore they have a long service life. But the cost of this type of membrane roof is the highest.
TPO membranes keep plasticity at negative temperatures, so they can be laid all year round. Installation of this roofing material is carried out using hot air. Thanks to this, a hermetic seam is obtained, the strength of which exceeds the parameters of the canvas itself by almost two times.
